Project objectives

Four PhD candidates study these novel technologies for offshore energy storage and transport options from a technical, system integration, regulatory and spatial perspective. Specifically, the DOSTA project includes the following four objectives:

  1. Model and optimize energy harvesting, power production, onsite storage utilization and balancing of collection cables in a hybrid offshore wind farm.
Robbert Nienhuis, Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen, supervised by prof. dr. Antonis Vakis and prof. dr. Bayu Jayawardhana.
  2. Identify the optimal design and operation of an offshore system for hydrogen production and transport using offshore wind.
Jan Wiegner, Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, supervised by prof. dr. Madeleine Gibescu and dr. Matteo Gazzani
  3. Identify key legal obstacles and propose legal solutions to facilitate and govern the development of new offshore storage and transport infrastructure.
Liv Malin Andreasson, Faculty of Law, University of Groningen, supervised by prof. dr. Martha Roggenkamp and prof. dr. Edwin Woerdman
  4. Identify the institutional innovations for marine spatial planning and associated (environmental) procedures for allocating offshore storage.
Juul Kusters, Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, supervised by prof. dr. Christian Zuidema and dr. Ferry van Kann

The researchers join forces targeting interdisciplinary and explicit policy recommendations for industry practitioners and civil servants on the feasibility of the analysed offshore storage and transport options.
